Handbook / Model

Historical source granularity

Maintain one explicit historical source for the affected scope and distinguish recorded observations from derived period values.

Methods and settings

Method / inputBehavior
RecordedAn amount explicitly entered for a supported historical source period.
DerivedA value aggregated or allocated from the historical source.
Source replacementConfirmed replacement for the affected historical fiscal-year scope.

A historical source is separate from a forecast source

Historical amounts can be owned by Annual, Quarterly, Monthly or Weekly observations for an eligible modeled line. The same line can use a different forecast source. Switching recorded history to Monthly therefore does not automatically transfer its future forecast to Monthly.

Historical-source state belongs to Base and is shared across scenarios. Edit an eligible historical source amount in Base and read the confirmation if it changes the source. Other timeframe results then derive from the confirmed historical source, rather than retaining competing totals.

Review the full affected scope

A historical-source change is evaluated across the affected actual fiscal years, not only the one cell you clicked. The confirmation identifies affected periods and the new historical source. Existing modeled economics initialize the replacement so unedited portions are not casually reset. A deliberately entered observation becomes recorded; other initialized portions remain distinguishable as derived.

Cancel if the intention was only to inspect a monthly allocation. Forecast ownership is preserved. Ordinary historical source entry requires complete historical periods; mixed Actual/Forecast periods are not direct Actual entry cells.

How derived flows and stocks behave

A historical revenue or cost amount is a flow. It is allocated across its dated intersections and aggregated once into other views. A recorded week spanning two fiscal years is split by its actual covered dates; its amount is not counted in full in both years.

A balance is a stock. Derived detail can interpolate between the prior boundary and the recorded closing observation, while aggregation reads the relevant closing point. For example, derived monthly receivables between known annual balances do not prove that customers owed exactly those amounts on each month-end. Use actual recorded detail when that distinction matters.

What provenance does and does not establish

Recorded means entered at that source, not externally audited or imported from an accounting system. Derived means calculated from other available observations, not missing or automatically invalid. Preserve that distinction when using a detailed chart, Inspector or an exported table.

The same accounting constraints still apply: historical working-capital stocks must reconcile with opening balances and available flows. Review opening balances when entry is rejected. The product does not turn an Annual statement into a transaction-level ERP history or fetch a historical data feed automatically.
