Handbook / Model

Business Lines and linked detail

Build independently modeled activities and follow their shared sources without duplicating the financial model.

Methods and settings

Method / inputBehavior
Line methodEach eligible line has its own forecast method and assumptions.
Source granularityOne controlling period grid per independently modeled line.
Linked detailAn expanded linked item is the same source in another context.

Create and maintain named lines

Open Revenue → Model and choose Add business line. The German label is Geschäftsbereich hinzufügen. Give the line a descriptive synthetic or own-company name and choose the forecast method appropriate to the activity. Other eligible statement groups have analogous named cost, balance, asset or financing positions.

The line menu supports duplication, reordering, active/inactive state, notes, deletion and scenario copying. Duplicate creates another contributing line; it is not merely another view. Disable keeps assumptions while excluding the line’s contribution. Deletion is rejected while another stored setup still references the line, including references in inactive methods. Replace or remove those dependencies first.

Use different methods for different activities

A product line might use Price × Volume, a stable activity Growth, and a service team Revenue / FTE. Each line can change method by forecast period. Apply Forward copies a chosen setup to later periods; it does not create a permanent link back to the original cell.

The lines contribute to Revenue. Costs can reference a particular revenue line, its quantity where eligible, or the total. For example, two revenue lines with different gross margins should have cost assumptions tied to the intended line rather than both unintentionally using the aggregate.

Different sources still form one model

One Business Line can own a Monthly forecast while another owns Annual or Weekly inputs. Parent totals aggregate those sources and may show Mixed. The total is not an additional editable forecast. Source ownership and source changes explain how to find or replace the controlling plan.

A linked employee or revenue item can be expanded within another line. Editing its name or eligible assumption changes the same owning item in the selected scenario. This nesting shows calculation relationships; it is not an arbitrary organizational hierarchy, legal-entity consolidation or a second copy of the item.

Analyze the driver, not a second total

Select a supported result in Analyze, then expand the business line to choose its active primitive assumptions. Growth, price, volume, margins and supported relationship productivity rates can be eligible according to the target and source context. Key Drivers ranks measured responses and can reveal which line matters most for that target.

A derived line result is not automatically a writable variable. Actuals, inactive methods, unavailable references and unrelated inputs can be ineligible. Source markers and Go to source help locate the controlling input. Model notes belong to the line; see Comments and history for their scope and the distinction from collaborative comments.
